Sometimes you just gotta shake shit up. Yes I know that was very direct but it's also sound advice. My husband said that to me 5 years ago when we lived in a one bedroom apartment in Red Bank, NJ. Best little town with amazing people and awesome food. We were both from Jersey and tired of the grind.
Don't get me wrong Jersey is great but it's also expensive. After years of long commutes (his not mine), expensive rent and the go go go life style we decided it was time for a change. We didn't know where we were going or what we were going to do but as Scott said, sometimes you gotta shake shit up. Over dinner and a bottle of wine we decided, we move to wherever an opportunity arises. If we like the location then we just do it.
I honestly thought I would find something first since I was determined to move to Texas and be near my family. Preferably Austin because I loved the area and the University of Texas. But nope, he beat me to it! An opportunity opened up at his work and we jumped on it. So instead of sunny, warm Texas we went to snowy beer city, Grand Rapids, Michigan where winters are harsh but summers are unbelievably beautiful.
Five years later we've gotten married, bought a house, got two dogs, and had a baby. We don't mess around people. We lucked out with an awesome relator who became our friend and met a group of fantastic humans through him. Our house is in a quiet area and our neighbors are awesome. Everything fell into place. It wasn't luck, it was persistence and team work.
I think back to our time in Red Bank and while I miss it, I believe our shake up was divine intervention. We knew that down the road we'd like to own a house and see one another more but that wouldn't be easy with our current situation. So we took the leap. It was terrifying and we went somewhere that we literally knew no one and we made it work. It made us a stronger team and it taught us take fear head on.
So whenever you are getting the itch for change, embrace it. Take the time to acknowledge it and start putting out into the universe that you're ready and it'll come. If you want to get a new job, put it out there and start looking. If you want a career change, start testing the waters and put it out there. Remember, when it does come, and it will - take it. Grab it and go. If you embrace this philosophy you'll find yourself doing it more often.
Live with persistence my friends and shake shit up.
